ASKEW SIGNS FOR THIRD SEASON IN MAINE

PORTLAND, ME – July 5, 2023 – The Maine Mariners announced their second player signing for the 2023-24 season on Wednesday, bringing back forward Cam Askew. It will be Askew’s third season in Maine, and his sixth professional campaign.

The South Boston, MA native has enjoyed two productive seasons with the Mariners, including a career year in 2021-22, when he registered a personal best 38 points and 23 goals in 69 games. He also had a great postseason, with five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in six playoff games. Last season, Askew appeared in 52 games, scoring 15 goals and adding 17 assists for 32 points. He also served as an alternate captain.

Askew was originally acquired by the Mariners in an offseason trade from the South Carolina Stingrays during the summer of 2021. He spent the first three seasons of his pro career in South Carolina, debuting in the 2018-19 season. Askew went to the Kelly Cup Finals with the Stingrays in 2021. His entire professional career has been spent in the ECHL.

The 26-year-old forward was highly touted as a junior player in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he was drafted 11th overall by Drummondville in 2015. Askew spent five seasons in the QMJHL from 2013-2018, with four different organizations.

“I am excited to be back in Portland make a run at the Kelly Cup,” said Askew. “October can’t come soon enough.”

Askew joins captain Connor Doherty on the 2023-24 roster. The defenseman officially signed last week.

The Mariners kick off their fifth ECHL season on October 20th, 2023 in Trois-Rivieres, QC against the Trois-Rivieres Lions, with the home opener on Saturday, October 21st at 6 PM, also against the Lions. The full schedule for the 2023-24 season, presented by Hannaford to Go, can be viewed here. Full and half season packages plus 12-game plans are on sale now by calling 833-GO-MAINE or visiting the Mariners front office at 94 Free St. in Portland.
